<description>And in a landmark decision, Nepal's Supreme Court today (19 November 2008) has directed the country's government to end sexual orientation-based discrimination and to extend equal rights to gender minorities, including same-sex marriage. If Nepal can do it...?

<description>Thank you, Yesh Prabhu. Yes, it's about time this law was changed. We are still waiting for the Supreme Court's verdict; the best possible reading down of the section would be to retain the prosecution of male rape and sexual offences against children, while decriminalising sex amongst consenting adults.

<description>I was delighted to read this article. I have been wondering for the last six months why it has taken the government of India so long to take a decisive stand regarding Indian Penal Code 377. The government has been talking about it for over six years now. Even though the Justices directed Additional Solicitor General P. P. Malhotra to reconcile the divergent views of the Health ministry and Home ministry in this matter, and to declare the government's postion in one voice, either for or aginst the repeal of the Penal Code 377, no progress has been made. Unless the Prime Minister himself takes personal interest in this matter and intervenes, the matter will not be resolved for another ten years. While proclaiming that India is progressive and shining, why does the government cling to this regressive and archaic law of the Dark Ages?</description>
